While it was pretty easy to chuckle at the ultra-reverent way the cartoonish stereotypes in last year's Groove flick spoke John Digweed's name, his stature in the disc-spinning community is now bordering on the peerless. Young kids and suits just beginning to skim the surface of the genre now know his name. The Hastings-born DJ/producer's skills are let loose on the wildly mushrooming scene in Los Angeles.
Based on a gig that took place late last year at the city's Mayan Theatre, the mid-week sellout was another testament to both the depth of the L.A. scene and the star quality of the Digweed name. The set explores Digweed's latest penchant for the deeper progressive stuff and slowly builds momentum over the course of the first traks. Launching with Pole Folder & CP's "Apollo Vibes," Digweed deposits the listener 10 tracks later in the melodic, dreamy hands of Brothers Love Dubs' "1-800 Ming." Standout bits along the way include Satoshi Tomiie's thumping "Penetration" (done under his Madam moniker) and the spacey flourishes of Photek's "Mine to Give." On the whole, the set provides a long, slow tease that is, at times, almost maddening when taken outside of the time-evaporating context of the dance floor.
House fans will be glad to have a marquee name devoting so much time to a thorough exploration of their vibe. |
