The British Open Championship for the Gold Cup dates from 1956 and is the successor to the old Hurlingham Open for the Champion Cup, which was last played in 1939. Sponsored by Veuve Clicquot, the tournament is held at Cowdray Park, where the late Viscount Cowdray revived polo as a national sport after the war.
